APRIL 2009
Welcome to KeyChain™, the monthly promotions update from Key Marketing & Promotions. To help you get the most out of your next trade show or expo, here is a short article from the president of our strategic partner Creative Training Solutions with some great tips...
A study done at UCLA years ago found that people convey more than half of their message non-verbally. That’s why it’s important to non-verbally communicate to attendees that: 1) you’re approachable; 2) you’d like them to enter your exhibit; and 3) you’d like to speak with them and/or help them find the information, product, service or solution they’re looking for. Communicate this message with your facial expression – a genuine smile sends a very positive message, eyes and body language. Suggestions to communicate interest (nonverbally) include:
- Face outward to engage attendees – if you face into your exhibit or display you’re nonverbally conveying you’re not available or not interested whether you mean to or not;
- Look around to engage attendees that have already entered your exhibit;
- Maintain an open body posture – no folded arms;
- Smile and communicate interest with your eyes;
- If the attendee looks away after you’ve made eye contact, wait for two or three seconds to see if the person looks back at you – often an indication that they’ll speak with you.

To add to the great impression you make with your great non-verbal communication and open body posture, you should consider thoughtful promotional giveaways that are relevant to your business or event theme. Avoid simply handing out items that you've spent your hard-earned marketing dollars on! Have recipients sign up for your newsletter, fill out a survey or agree to a product demo. This way you are more likely to reach more qualified prospects for your product or service.
